Items like this are seen frequently in antique stores. Called a trivet, this object is generally placed underneath a serving dish, usually to protect a table from heat damage. A metal trivet will often have legs to prevent heat from being directly transferred to the object underneath. Materials such as wood, ceramic, fabric, silicone, and cork are also used to make trivets, among others. Cast iron is favored for holding heavier objects and was common in the 1900s. Trivets can range from simple to ornate and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
